Sugary donuts


Highly addictive, horribly debilitating, unfortunately pervasive, and freaking delicious. Sugar is to be the main cause of our expanding waistlines and rapidly deteriorating health.


The first time we think of sugar we think of white granules normally but there are about 60 different types of sugars and it’s become very good at hiding itself everywhere.

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that comes in many different forms. In its simplest form, it is called a monosaccharide and includes:

Glucose (occurs naturally in fruits and plant juices)

Fructose (occurs naturally in fruits, some root vegetables, cane sugar, and honey)

Galactose (combines with glucose to form lactose)

Sugars are carbohydrates; every carbohydrate we eat eventually breaks down into sugar. Sugars (carbohydrates) are the first energy source the body goes to they are much faster to break down into energy than their protein and fat counterparts. And, at the end of the day, we eat for energy. We need energy. Therefore, we need to eat. And it’s sugars (carbs!) that are the preferred fuel source for cells in our body. Why? Because they are so quick to break down into that energy our cells so desperately crave.

While eating a little bit of sugar is fine, on average we are eating way more than is recommended. Men should eat no more than 150 calories from added sugar per day and women no more than 100 calories.

To put that into perspective, one 12-oz can of Coke contains 140 calories from sugar, while a regular-sized Snickers bar contains 120 calories from sugar.

But it’s important to note that there is no need for added sugars in the diet. The less you eat, the healthier you will be.

We naturally like the taste of sweet foods and it is therefore easy for the occasional sweet or a sugary drink to become part of our daily routine without us noticing. We often use sweets, cakes, and sugary drinks as a reward, or to pick us up if we’ve had a bad day. Because of this, we can start to feel reliant on sugary foods and drinks, and some people feel as though they’ve developed an addiction.

Sugary junk foods stimulate the same areas in the brain as drugs of abuse. For this reason, sugar can cause people to lose control over their consumption. That said, sugar is not nearly as addictive as drugs of abuse, and “sugar addiction” should be comparatively easy to overcome.

If you have a history of binge eating, failure at setting rules about your eating (like cheat meals or days) and repeated failures with the “everything in moderation” approach, then perhaps you are addicted. In the same way that a smoker needs to avoid cigarettes completely, a sugar addict needs to avoid sugar completely. Some Complete abstinence is the only reliable way for true addicts to overcome their addiction.


At the end of the day, it’s important to figure out the sugar intake that’s right for you. Some people can handle a little bit of sugar in their diet, while for others it causes cravings, binge eating, rapid weight gain, and disease.
